I've been using the beta version of Bartender for a little while now to get my Mac's menubar under control. I use it to hide away things I want in my menubar, but don't need instant access to or want to look at all the time. That includes F.lux, bluetooth, keychain, VPN on my personal laptop, and textinput. You can either completely remove things from the menubar, rearrange them, or have them appear in a secondary Bartender bar accessible under its own icon.

The interface aesthetic has a ways to go (I don't know what's up with the black bartender of doom graphics) but in practice all you have to look at are three little dots in your menubar.

They just shipped 1.0 and the 50% off introductory discount is going away soon (like, today soon). You can still snag it for $7.50. They have a free trial if you want to try it out first.

Let me know how you like it if you get it. Make sure and set "Open at Login" in your preferences.
